What you do if you were playing a secret afterhours

Post by terly »

Would you tell a lot of people about it and try to play a big set, or would you keep it quiet and just see who shows up? I think this time there is an emphasis on being secretive but it's tempting to try drawing a bigger crowd (since it is a fairly large venue in an area of town where we can be quite loud)

Looking for some advice, stories. When I operated an illegal club, it eventually got shut down after becoming well known enough and I want to respect the special thing these organizers have (no advertising at all, address not posted anywhere, no info line, word of mouth only)

If I was playing I'd leave the promo up to the...promoters.

I'm sure if they wanted help they would ask you to tweet/FB/whatever. Sounds like they got the downlow vibe sorted though.

I would highly advise you to tattoo the details on the bottom of your feet.
Walk barefoot from now on until the night you play the venue.
Anyone who had the chance to decipher the details from between all the other dirt on your feet,
deserves to be fucking there.

Also, make sure they need to see both of your feet to be able to read all the details.
Don't make it too easy on them, the fucking cunts !

It's in Canada.

Good call, I'll just tell a few friends.

On a serious note, what's a big set? Play what you wanna play, tell some friends if you want. Doesn't matter if 1 or 1000 people turn up, play and have fun!

Well I'd say it does matter somewhat, when you're doing an amazing set and no one is there to hear it, it is gonna feel a bit pointless. A lifetime ago I was opening up in an abandoned buildings' cellar (which had some really cool unusual acoustics btw, did have to do some crazy eqing) and when I was about 30 minutes in there were about 8 people there, compared to almost a full house at the end. The energy you're gonna feel is just completely different.

If you tell the right people, they will come
how far do you want to go

Just noticed the missing word in the thread title. My English on here is worse than some who speak it as a 2nd language, how embarrassing

I find I play differently depending on the size of the crowd

I'd rather have 3 people going nuts than a room full of chin strokers and head nodders...

How are you going to keep the gangsters and proper fuck-ups out?

That has always been an issue with all the afterhours i've ever been to

It's not a proper afters if you don't have the fear for at least half of it

Door crew?
That's what we did when I was putting on illegals on London.
Except we as the collective were the door crew.
Tough work.

At a place I used to run and various one-off parties, we just promoted it in such a way that the crowd was always pretty good. Didn't really ever have to turn people away.

In this case, it's actually a gangster running it. We had booked him for a set once and all his sketchy crew came out, but they are pretty well-behaved. I also used to attend his parties back in the day. It's not so bad once you get to know them.

some criminals have very ethical behavior codes.
Only problem is when they start flipping out.

Man, growing up in the midlands, the problem is was that all the door crew were in on the act, more concerned with protecting the 'dance floor profits' for their gangster mates, rather than protecting the dance floor from their gangster mates.

After a literal police siege one morning, I decided to call the after hours scene quits.

Where in the Midlands? I used to go to DiY and Smokescreen free parties which were generally hassle free due to being in the middle of nowhere. They were still heavy on casualties and one did kick off with some thug bottling people and no security to sort it out. Ugly.

I also ended up at an afters in a warehouse in Birmingham and experienced what must of been the politest taxing ever ie they said thank you and left me enough money for a taxi

Just played one on Friday there, it was great craic. A few bands to start, couple of djs, me doin the live thing with some machines then a dj to close. Being the only place open on Good Friday it pulled a decent crowd. It starts of great for me, I wake up early as fuck itchin to go, run through the set a bit and pack up the gear. Log it up 8 flights of stairs into a big hall for sound check then go for some food. After the munch back to the spot to catch the bands and wait about for what seems like forever to do my thing, all the wile lovely cunts are tryin to feed me all different types of powder, happy days! By the time I'm on I'm knackered, my backs fucked and realise I shoulda slept till 5pm before heading out for the night! So aye, get some decent sleep for as long as ya can before attacking it, getting up at 9am with excitement and rarin to go is not the way! Was a great party though!

Forgot to say it was a private Facebook event. Works well I think. The spot was getting raided every other week until all promo was done on a private event. Also a private group is another option. Build a following through the group and it lets you approve new members etc, keeping the clampits at bay :)
