I would like some tips
Hey everyone, the sound id love to be able to reproduce is the real heave distorted techno like Tommy Four Seven, and alot of the other stuff on clr, I cant seem to get the power in the kick or the sub, I do understand Tommy uses field recordings and abuses his furniture for the thump in his kicks, does anybody have any suggestions?

Did you read the T47 Interview Sean? You probably have, but there are a few clues in there.

Get yourself some tinfoil & an overdrive plug, and y'll be sorted - lol
Its been a while since I listened to the album, but one thing that struck me was the way he'd get a loop - probably a short "tinfoil" loop - and shortening it so it became, maybe a hat type sound.. then he'd lengthen the release at different points to make a bit of a break.. or have it as a rhythm. Its a good idea.
James is the King of distortion & getting loops of fkn anything & getting them rolling. I know he recommends the Rectifier preset in the Saturator. He does a lot of para distortion & para compression. Hopefully he'll chip in a few pointers.
My only advice on distortion is that if its a big, dominant sound on a loop, stick an eq after & start off by scooping out the mids to get it controlled.. then go from there. We were messing about before with the EQ3 kill switches.. add distortion or whatever.. then switch off the M for instant scoopy deepness.

Good tips ICN
Going to have a go on that later because distortion has always been tricky for me, but I really like it when it's done well.

When i distort my track i tend to use the saturator on my druk group, and vintage warmer on my master. The saturator in the group effects everything! Kick included and will take away some if the punch. If you want a distorted sound but want the kick to have more punch, you would need to take the the kick out of the group, problem with that is that I use compression on the group so if I take out the kick It won't effect the comp! I haven't worked it out yet but im sure there will be a way around it. I post when I find out! What I would then do I add a distortion plug on a return channel and mix the distortion into the kick.

To get things moving about I use revers and auto filter as inserts. I have the rare and amounts set at random settings, sometimes just a little so it's not to obvious! And set the phase so they bounce from left to right a little. Reverb I'll have different one on different channels, anything between 10-50% wet and use an eq or filter to cut any low or high frequencies that I do want. all of this is or course bring sucked in and out by the compressor!

Re: I would like some tips
Only way I have found to keep things congruent is to stick an autofilter after the very last thing in the mastering chain & pull out the lows after everything. No spike in levels then. You still have the kick playing - but fk it.Mslwte wrote:Something I've been thinking about myself gurr13rgurr13r wrote:Hey everyone, the sound id love to be able to reproduce is the real heave distorted techno like Tommy Four Seven, and alot of the other stuff on clr, I cant seem to get the power in the kick or the sub, I do understand Tommy uses field recordings and abuses his furniture for the thump in his kicks, does anybody have any suggestions?

Re: I would like some tips
Thanks so much guys for all the advice and input here, im not too up to date on the lingo or maybe its just alot of information to try and process at once, im trying though I have come to believe that producing tracks as good as t47 is a bit out of my grasp at the moment, I shall improve with each attempt with the help and guidance of you, my fellow techno fiends, shur didnt Tommy have Chris Liebing giving him a hand, nobody knows it all... yet I think if we all help out, this topic could be red hot and our tunes will be scorchio!
