abletons groove
abletons groove
something ive never been happy about is abletons swing. i can never really seem to get the swing function to do much in the way moving the notes/or sounds most of the presets dont seem to actually do anything at all even extracting the groove from another track doesnt really work. does the swing function work on audio loops? or just midi?
the best way to get my tracks moving is by moving midi notes manually. anyone find this or what am i doing wrong?

Same as - I never know which one is good. They all sound a bit funny to me too.
It always sounds too much - even if I pull the % back on it.
I like the MPC ones normally, cos they seem to have ones at odd places, rather than all moved by the same amount.
And theres one called Swing - but with that one, I end up using the 51% or something like that.
I'm not qualified really to recommend anything as I dont like the swing settings.. makes everything sound minimal/tech house to me when I do it. 9.5 times out of 10, everything settles in its own groove.

Re: abletons groove
Really? I like the Ableton groove function. I like to steal them from records, so I have some from funk and disco tracks.
My tip for using the built-in one is to try the swing 16 (so it is moving 16th notes). Select the Swing 16-99 then use the amount % to make it sound good, maybe 20 - 65%. I prefer that to using one of the set percentages (ie Swing 16-35 is 35%) because it is easier to set it to sound good.
You can click the commit in the clip view to see what it has done.
Still, there is nothing wrong with doing it yourself.

This is true, especially the swing 16

Re: abletons groove
Cool Ant.. I ususally hear it then x the fk out of it before I do any further damage
I was just watching a vid on YT from point blank.. and theres a guy making a "driving bassline"..
He doesnt use any groove apart from what I see. He's only got where the notes are placed to begin with, then uses the counter rhythm of another bassline to make it groove. Theres a bit of ping pong delay on top alrght.. but no real swing settings as far as I see.
Fair enough, it is a bit static in a way.. and a bit trancy.. but its got a respectable groove without feeling like it should be affected by some setting for the sake. I think its ok not to groove if it doesnt need it. Sometimes the way envelopes are set set.. or where the start point is on the sample - theres a bit of a delay in notes happening anyway, isnt there?

I'm the same with this. The "swing" grooves sound too much like minimal. If I use any its the MPC ones but even then I use it very subtly.Ant wrote:This is true, especially the swing 16

Re: abletons groove
MPC is getting a lot of love.. lol
Think its the "Funker" ones that I click.

Re: abletons groove
It confuses me to be honest. AND it only moves the midi notes (or markers on audio clips) and doesn't affect velocity right? Which in itself can affect groove a lot. I tend to manually adjust velocity.
Though, that said, I've extracted the groove from a bunch of Toolroom tracks to try to see of they have similar groove settings. Haven't found a huge consistency yet but I did use one of them on my latest.

Re: abletons groove
ii do it manualy too. and like block alter the velocity too. thats just as important if not more than just shiftin notes around
straight 16eens can sound proper when a few velocity changes are in. dont forget about routing that vel changes to parameters on the plug in. lazy mans programmin fo'sho! hahaha

Re: abletons groove
It confuses me too because with MIDI it doesn't give you any visual cues and the piano roll looks exactly the same after quantizing. Still works ok tho I think, but would be nice to see it reflected on the roll.
Re: abletons groove
I've been fkkn with a loop tonight on Live.
I've got MPC 16 funker 70 - stripped back to 63% quantize & 11% timing on a row of 16th notes. AND its going well for me.
Been listening to loads of proper techno today. Sounds well heavy.
I'd done a few 16ths with lower velocity anway.. the quant just exaggerated the groove. The 16ths are looping over 3bars - so it sounds like its chugging along. I have a reverb on insert, about 45% wet, decay 710ms too, which kinda gives it a slight, is it slapback. Kinda goes against the groove.

Re: abletons groove
go into the roll view. off to the left there's a "commit" button under the groove name. click and you see the groove applied to the piano roll.sam wrote:It confuses me too because with MIDI it doesn't give you any visual cues and the piano roll looks exactly the same after quantizing.
