Wow, iOS/iPad apps are crazy now!

Post by dubdub »

Been sick in bed the last couple of days and wanted to see what you can do on an iPad music wise now these days. And damn, you can do some crazy things with these now! You can pretty much turn your iPad into a modular synthesis playground for a hundred bucks.

Apps i've got after doing some research:
- AUM: can host your other apps and allows you to record audio clips with ease. Also allows you to multitrack and mix, but I don't really use that.
- Drambo: This one's crazy. Pretty much a fully fledged modular synth by the BeepStreet guys who did a great analog modeled synth a few years ago (Dagger). Top class DSP, even compared to desktop VST land, and it's got a good amount of weirder modules like waveguides and physical modelling. Can't believe this runs on a **** iPad!
- miRack: A fully fledged VCV rack fork! Doesn't have all of the models of the regular VCV but it's got a good amount, among them all the Mutable Instruments stuff. Again, can't believe this is running on in ipad!
- Audulus: Very deep, Reaktor-esque, low-level playground. Haven't really made the dive in yet but it seems to have a lot to offer.
- ID700: Weird FM/waveshaping synth inspired by a rare digital Buchla synth from the 80s.
- Moog Model 15:: Sounds really nice. Much better than the old Arturia Moog Modular emulation.
- iVCS3: For my money, this one's actually the best digital VCS emulation out there. Weird, organic, noisy, unpredictable. Would love to have this as a VST.

I wouldn't use an iPad as an actual DAW replacement, but for noodling around and recording sampler fodder in your bed/couch/bathtub or on go the go / while travelling it's pretty fucking amazing.

Apparently there's also some really cool sequencers if you're interested in driving hardware.

The problem I've had is I have bought the Apps, played with them for a few hours and then just forgotten about them.

Will be interesting to know if what you do on the iPad ever makes it in to a track

Idk, I'm not really trying to write tracks with these. Just weird modular-style noises and stuff I can use in the background etc.

iPad apps and digitakt are a good combo as you can just plug iPad in to usb of digitakt to get audio and midi both ways. Entire tracks can be made this way.

Would you people say they add something to the equation if you already have a DAW full of plugins? Or are they just nice couch toys if you already happen to own an iPad?

I would actually like to find a half-decent mini DAW/groovebox for my Android phone. Mainly to lay down ideas when when commuting or otherwise in a different place than my computer.

I would say it's more of a couch toy but there IS some very cool ioS software that's not available on PC.

Android is really not a great platform for audio stuff since Apple has put a lot more effort in supporting music-making on ioS and premium apps just don't sell well on Android in general so devs don't bother with it. I am an Apple hater but the iPad is a great device (I also use it a lot for PDF/Ebook reading and annotation). I have ~4-5 year old iPad mini and it runs all the apps without breaking a sweat.

Has anybody tried that Ableton app that came out for iOS? It looked very intuitive in the videos I've seen so far

I bought it but have not used it much, it’s cool though.

It’s just annoying that you know the options ableton has, en then are suddenly limited by the software.

There's an old Android app called Caustic 3, which seems like a perfect tool to get techno/house/hip hop/etc ideas down. Simple, but doesn't look too dumbed down either. Unfortunately it's now so old my new Android phone doesn't support it anymore, so I can't try it.

FL Studio has a portable version, probably gonna try that at some point. A friend of mine told me it's kinda too complex and fiddly for a small phone screen though.
