U-he Satin users, great tips

Post by Lost to the Void »

Satin is still IMO the best tape emulation out there.
It takes some digging to really get just how good it is, but once you understand it all, it`s the best.

I imagine quite a few users don`t really fully use it`s features.

Here is a really great video by Dan Worrall, on using the Compander section of the plugin....- Which really does add some more loveliness to the overall sound.

Whats your thoughts on satin versus the softube tape emulation? I was looking into a tape vst a while ago and think I remember It was recommended that softube was the one to have.

Cool video. I knew about doing the Dolby trick with it but I didn't know you could use two instances for en/decoding and use it as an actual compander. That's pretty neat!

Have you tried ChowTape? It's a freeware research project created by an DSP academic. It's a bit whacky for 2bus use but in STN mode it does some kinda magic fairy dust tape thing for sure... I think it's probably the very dynamic and nonlinear hystersis model?

I think I've seen u-he stuff on sale once in the last... well, ever. And that was some cross promo thing with Native Instruments last year. So I wouldn't count on it going on sale any time soon :|

Looking forward to watching this video, I've only recently discovered Dan Worrall's videos. And I know I'm not using Satin to its full potential

I use the softube just as a saturator sometimes. I was really into it, but I found myself coming back to Satin again as you just have way more control over the sound, and the compression is better.

Good Share! You guys should at least snag the encoder > saturation/distortion > decoder trick if you guys are skeptical of watching the video.

+1
Fucking love Satin been using it on my master since the day it was released. It just sounds good. Softube I bought on sale for silly money, not really my thing, but its great on hi-hats pushed for crunch. I have not really dived deep into Satin (other than mixing tape formats) as its presets just sound so damn good. However I adore the flanger, IMO its the best sounding flanger, silky smooth, again I just take a preset and tweak it to suit.
