Flanger use in Techno music

Post by Rickskii »

I don’t really use a flanger effect at all. Is there any case use that I should be trying out in Techno music whether experimental or otherwise?

Cheers.

I use flangers on everything. I'm not a fan of really big, obvious flanger sweeps but you can do much more with them when you turn down the feedback or modulation depth. Try ValhallaSpacemodulator, that thing is insane. You can go from flanging to doubling to chorus to phasing to pitch shifting to reverb.

I've just recently started using flanger chorus and delays much more.

Try all of them sparingly on various sounds and I think youll recognise them more than you think.

I love a good quality flanger, keep it subtle and dirty (and generally slow). Or I go as extreme as possible. No middle ground.

Eventide instant flanger and phaser are on sale right now. https://store.eventideaudio.com/pages/i ... classics-1

Also I recently discovered that phasemistress is shockingly crazy sound design machine.

I like flanger fx before my reverbs since it gives the reverb a feeling of movement. I feel that it doesn't make too much a difference in the grand scheme of things but when you're spending a few hours making music listening to the same loop, it helps you not get bored.

I regularly put small amounts on the hat or hats buss to give them bit of life. It kind of replicates slight filter automation over a bar of two.

If I have a musical bassline then I'll use a small amount which replicates slightly different ADSR settings on each note and funks things up a little.

In both instances, it's only about a 20% mix level and definitely doesn't sound like a traditional flanger. Apart from that beds and risers and the usual shite.

I was sampling a mess of distorted kicks & feedback yesterday.

The kicks were ducking down the flanger layer, and gaps in the pattern allowed the limiter (at the end of everything) to pull up the feedback. I was initially messing with a flanger, but settled on a chorus finally. All on extreme settings.

Don't really use them for much else. Pads sometimes. Resampling / sampler food is good as you get imperfections.

Btw.. have a love / hate relationship with Flangers. Love the extreme sound that you hear on claps on some old Detroit records.. but don't like when I do it myself.

First world problems lol

If you hate flangers you'll probably like comb filters. I like using Serum's.

ValhallaSpacemodulator and the stock flanger from Ableton get a lot of use in my tracks. I love a bit of flanger on hats as mentioned above, at maybe 10-20% wet.

Obviously on pads they can help to add a bit of movement and even on bass lines they can be nice. It's usually a matter of dialling back the mix knob until the obvious flanging sound disappears. Unless that is what you are looking for of course.

I love flangers, use them a lot. They can be great fun to experiment with and give very interesting results.

Like steve touched on, i find theyre best when you either use them as a subtle effect or go nuts and use them extreme with high feedback settings etc..

Heres an example where i used them on some hi hats to add a bit of movement.

I really like the sound of a flanger effect. Use the extreme effect while DJ'ing. when I use it in tracks it's much more subtle, if any at all. It's not oly bound by experimental music, there is a lot of pop/rock/hiphop/mainstream EDM that uses the flagler effect.
