Ring Modulation

Post by Lost to the Void »

I absolutely love Ring Modulators as effects.
There are surprisingly few in the vst realm, that I can find anyway.

Anyone know of any good ring modulators?

I feel your pain. I love them as well.
As you say there are usually no 100% dedicated RMs but implanted RM in other units instead. Oh well.

Here are a few I dig:

M multibandringmodulatorhttp://www.meldaproduction.com/mcreativ ... ulator.php
Ringelay http://www.shuttlebugrecords.com/Pages/shuttleplugs.htm
Ringo http://music.service-1.de/html/wok_ring ... r_vst.html
Modulatorhttp://www.niallmoody.com/ndcplugs/themodulator2.htm

Then some goodies where RM is included in like Truc2, Camelphat and the likes.

Funny you should post this. After reading Mike Parkers Tea & Techno podcast I made it my mission to learn about RM and see if I could find a decent one.
I bought the M multibandringmodulator, by my amateur standards I think it's pretty good, and can see how it will be useful. There's also a grain effects module they also do which could be handy when combined with the RM

Arturia's Moog Modular V can be used as an insert effect, which has a ring modulator.

I have modulator 2, will try some of the others cheers.

I love ring mods that self oscillate and feedback, I used to use a fair bit of that in my harder stuff

RM has always been a mystery to me. I've only ever used the ones built into synths. What would you generally use it for? I guess adding upper harmonics etc.

Ring mods are great fuckeruppers

You can use them for so much, turning sounds into metallics
slow changing atonal sweeps
turning stuff into chords
adding wicked harmonic resonance

all sorts

I feel the same way. Every time I've used one, it never gave good results. It just changes things into generally useless noise. I'm sure this is purely a result of my lack of understanding on how they work, but based on the few times I've tried to apply them to my sounds, it just didn't do anything useful.

yeah I've always found it odd that there are so few ring mods in VST form. oddly enough my favourite software ring modulator is Synapse Audio RM-1 which is only available for Reason as a Rack Extension.
