Re: Help with headphone choice
What everyone else is saying is really good info. The M50s are fantastic, but I only use them for checking the low end as the mids are a bit recessed sounding to me. The great thing is the lows are very properly stated, which can be overwhelming in headphones. If you have too much low end, it is ver...

Wow, can't believe I've been so out of touch on 'new tech'.
This looks so good! They've addressed so many things that bugged me and added some new great looking features!
Sweet.

Re: EQ and Phase
Ethan Winer's post is "incomplete" at best. Phase shift from equalizers is definitely audible. An easy black box example is a kick drum with a strong transient. Many EQs change the timing of the "click" just by introducing them into the signal path with all settings normalled. There are many papers ...

Since you're into that, you might also dig:

I have a few IR libraries, worthing noting these are well organized and quite good.

Re: Limiters
The EMI TG12413 Limiter plugins are wonderful, sadly discontinued but still running with 32 Lives. Excellent color for certain things like leads. Also, the vladg Limiter №6 is brilliant and without cost. Highly recommend it. PS Also check out vladg's Molot compressor, Sigma mode on it is exactly wha...

Re: Moog Sub 37
Definitely not a boring synth. A real instrument, moog needs to be your thing though. Plenty of other options as well that might fulfill you. I've always been more into Roland or other more "modern" sounds. I do love the physicality and ergonomics of moog though, had a sub phatty for a while, did a ...

Re: beneficial to sit-in with your mastering engineer?
Cool and accurate thread.
Always a good time sitting in with the mastering engineer, less common now perhaps, but expect to pay an "attended" rate.
Some of the most clever people you can meet who have a lot of time to think about very specific problems.

Re: Maxxbass: worth it?
MaxxBass and RBass should require a license for use. Dangerous stuff, but you can definitely make good use of it. I tend to use it on dense mixes when I need to fit in another bass layer in an already full track. For the most part though, I don't use it much recently as my tracks have gotten sparser...

Re: Stingy percussion
A lot of good ideas in this thread, they all give cool results. As for what is really the very tight "pingy" attack Porc which is very tight sounding, samplers playing with the Start/End sample and some purposeful pops or clicks. My Analog RYTM does all that really well with samples, and I get it in...

Re: standard set of effects?
Always changing effects but I have few outboard things I get a lot of use out of and some great plugins. I think we all end up going through phases.
Currently I am keeping a template with three send FX I use a lot.
Loving Replika. It is brilliant and can do many things.

Re: would you buy a Tempest or an Analog Rytm? WHY?
I've finished full records with both and the Analog RYTM by far is a better work tool. The Tempest always had a lot of noise, loose timing, not total "recall" for projects and other issues. (Haha, sounds like some things certain people might actually like more, which is cool and I get it.) The Elekt...

Re: How do I....(reverb)
....I think I am going to do a really bad job of explaining this but anyways.... In Logic, I have Space Designer on some Porc, the Porc sucks but I love the way the verb sounds, is there anyway of literally just having the verb without the Porc or is that directly attributed to the Porc? If that do...

Re: Question about the master volume
I guess keeping peaks under 6dBFS is generally a good idea. I tend to work with my peaks at about -10 dBFS. I work with outboard though so my gain staging has that in mind. My converters are setup at +4dBu = -16dBFS Going with the idea that you'd want to be hitting around 0dBu RMS in the analog doma...

Re: Reverb and Delay through bus channels
I think a fair rule of thumb for most situations would be: Send/Return Effects for "Mix" oriented effects (A short reverb to add ambience to dry tracks, a long for general space, a delay used on a few tracks etc.) And Insert Effects for when the effect is a part of the "sound design" of that specifi...

Re: Hybrid mixing 8 channel limit
Hey yan6, There are a few ways to group the channels. I won't go over everything, but give you one idea that I don't expect to see mentioned. Try grouping tracks by their types of transients. An engineer from SSL gave me that idea once and things definitely clicked when he showed it to me. I find it...

Re: Those that mix from DAW>Ext mixer, how do you set yours
Hmm, another possibility is some kind of control interface to make mixing more tactile rather than all with the mouse. Yeah, that is actually the thing I miss most from working on a large format desk. Touch and workflow. A large desk becomes an instrument, but is only most important really for genr...
