Re: Keeping it simple

Limit yourself to a certain set of tools. Its very hard to do on a loaded computer. I have recently ditched a comp for an octatrack on a coffee table. This forced me to only set up a handful of machines thus limiting my options. Best thing that ever happened to me. It makes me to explore each of my ...

Re: Thicker Synth - Help

run the synth hard out of your comp into an analogue pedal (fooger etc) and back in.
then mix that signal with the "dry" signal to taste.
that or play it through a guitar amp and record that and blend it with the "dry signal

Re: Virus B

I have a Virus C, didn't use it at all for ten years because I thought it sounded too trancy. I absolutely love it now, its my goto synth. Both the mod matrix and arp I find fantastic, massively more versatile than any other synth Ive used, a real sound designers dream. However, I do find its direct...

Re: Mixing, Balance And Spacing

In my experience, and I spent a good 15 years trying to achieve a good mix etc, it mostly comes down to 3 things 1. Knowing your monitors/headphones and how they translate on small (car stereo) and big (club) systems. 2. The sounds you choose and how they sit naturally with each other (limiting the ...

Re: Your favorite "analog" / "character" EQ / Filter plugins

For an EQ, FabFilter Pro Q 2 is the best I have found by a long shot.

For glue/character UAD's Studer A800 plug is an absolute must.
I haven't made one track without using it (master channel only) since I bought it.

If you're talking about DJ'ing, I'd say drop mixing is how I deal with this 99% of the time.

Re: Your biggest revelation/breakthrough?

Realising that all it comes down to is habit, determination and not identifying with the music I make. For years I struggled to make the music I wanted, giving up and moving on in the loop stage, never actually completing the process and finishing a track. When I just let it be and finished everythi...

Re: U.K. - Items for sale

haha, yer it may be a little, I think they were 4k last I checked. The Koma bit I like because of the little sequencer and the compact size, the d beam is a bonus for me, seems like a very expressive tool for live and studio use, however, Ive had to downsize my studio now and the Koma is no longer o...

Octa, it's incredibly individual and versatile and it may as well be a synth once u start messing with single cycle waveforms.

Thats exactly it for me, little starting points for inspiration Here's another i'm sure most people will dislike ;) I wrote this out for a mate on Skype so please excuse the bad grammar etc i had a kick coming off the 808 and a channel with a sample in it, it was a chord type sound, on a one bar loo...

Re: Tips from the subsekt / Fxpansion Competion [NOW CLOSED]

Ha, I guess thats where people differ. I know how to use my studio inside out, however I find myself approaching making music in similar ways each time I sit down. Thats why I love techniques like the one I described above. It puts the patterns down to randomness and instead relies on my picking out...

Yer, the barefoots are going to take a while to afford yet I think.
I did win 50m2 of acoustic foam on ebay a few months back but have delayed mounting it due to the move.
Hopefully they'll breathe a bit of life back into my old Adam A7's

Re: U.K. - Items for sale

Thanks, sorry for the hassle, missed it as I wasn't logged in when I looked. Yer, I guess it seems like a lot of gear, some of it has already been replaced or superseded and has been sat doing nothing for some time though. Other bits like the voyager, I just don't use enough to justify keeping. Got ...

Re: Tips from the subsekt / Fxpansion Competion [NOW CLOSED]

I realise the comp has ended, but I just posted this technique on gearslutz and by chance saw this thread afterwards. Its just what Ive been looking for as I find Im repeating myself a lot in the studio and its a little boring. Ill post another tomorrow or so, once I can be bothered to type it out. ...

U.K. - Items for sale

I hope this isn't frowned upon in here, but I have some studio items for sale and i'd rather avoid ebay if I could. Here's the list. Im in North East Yorkshire (England) Happy to post or deliver locally or to somewhere along the M1 on the way to london No prices set, I figured it would be better to ...

Re: Really Bizarre Problem in Live

That's what I thought, this was their initial response. Hi Marc, Sorry to hear about this. My first thought is that this is sample rate issue. If you were previously running at Fs (44/48k) and are now working at 2Fs then your I/O number will have shifted - is this a possibility? In this case all num...
