Re: Sampling sources - The importance of Bit Depth
I truly never think about bit depth. I have both Logic and Ableton set to 24 bit - set and leave. I'm importing sounds and samples from all over the place and I'm happy with the basic sound quality of my music. As others are saying, a crappy bit depth can be a real bonus. I spend more time trying to...

Re: One Rule I Should Just Learn
Basically, if it no longer works for you, how can you stand over it - or even finish it. Sort of. Although I'm not a quitter. I tend to work hard on something until I can complete it. What I've recently realised is the multiple fx and complicated automation schemes is probably a sign (for me) that ...

Yes, me too.
If I can get everything sounding good and grooving without fx I think I'm on to a winner.

One Rule I Should Just Learn
I've found one thing I should learn from. If I'm using a lot of automation and fx, my track is not good enough. I've seen other producers using complicated automation schemes and it works, but for me it's a sign I'm trying to change a sow's ear into a silk purse. I started a track a couple of weeks ...

Re: what was i thinking?
I'm sort of the opposite. I work on tracks for months, never satisfied, and never release. Then I go back to stuff from 6 months ago (after a long ear break) and think, that wasn't half bad, I should have just finished it and let it loose. Overall though, yes, my work is improving every month. So th...

Re: What are your recording/structuring/composition techniqu
"Better workflow' is probably a personal thing. I probably sacrifice a speedy workflow for reasons of creativity and musical outcomes. I mix hardware with software and am shifting back to using mostly hardware (synths and fx). I have analog synths and modular systems. The latter can be very slow to ...

Re: ableton live 9 leaked screenshots?
There is a video of Live 9, showcasing some of the new fx, and it goes into The Glue in a little detail.
The Glue looks and sounds great, as does the new filtering.

Re: Production technique vs music
Requoted in full. Good post! I don't think clean or dirty has anything to do with it, you still need to understand production to make a "dirty" tune not sound complete dirge. I don't see it as versus, one goes hand in hand with the other. Techno is DIY. The money isn't there for people to write the ...

Re: Compressors
I only use basic compressors. I only use software compressors for mild sidechaining, or fx (like smashing things for effect). I always use a hardware compressor on my two buss, but with the needle barely flickering and with hardly any noticeable change in the sound. Less is more for me on both EQ an...

Re: How to get that techno sound?
easier said than done...been trying for a couple of years now and still no success It's a funny one, because the groove is basically pre-set. Four on the floor, off beat hi-hat, claps and/or snare on 2 and 4. ALTHOUGH, it's good to hear some producers finally breaking out of that now, but still, it...

Re: Record Labels vs DIY (fundraising and direct selling)
If I can insert a mini comment, just because I've been around a lot of signed bands....... The downside of signing to a label is potential compromise due to collaboration. Personally, I think collaboration can be a positive force for good. I've seen ok albums improved by an impartial input from outs...

Re: Why are female record producers so rare?
I think it's a subject worth a few insightful comments.
Like other raw nerve subjects, people spend pages making jokes back and forth, which takes up space that could be used more positively.
If the only female in the thread says it's not so funny, I think it's worth taking that on board.

No idea it was still that bad.
Certainly, as far as web forums go, I despair often when a female artist is brought up for discussion and the first half dozen posts are about how 'hot' said artist is........ then eventually someone might get around to talking about the music.

Re: Custom Ear Plugs & In-ear Monitors
If your ears ring after leaving a club, or when going to bed after the night, you are damaging your ears. The body has an amazing ability to repair, but everyone is different. Some people can abuse their ears for 40 years and never suffer permanent damage. For others it only takes on Summer of party...

Re: Postives n shit.
I think I mentioned before, I used to write music for TV, and do film trailers. It taught me a helluva lot. Given a guide trailer with a mix of Mahler, Groove Armada and NIN, then told to come back with something with the same mood 48 hours later. Really interesting and insightful to pull commercial...

Re: Record Labels vs DIY (fundraising and direct selling)
Love The Cynical Musician. One thing though, a good label is much more than a source of funding. There's help with publicity of course, but more importantly it's another objective opinion on your work. I enjoy collaborating. I know even in techno, a label (often owned and run by a top DJ) can help e...

Re: How to get that techno sound?
One issue for me is the throw away nature of dance music, possibly all music, in the internet age. I know when I first started buying techno (early 90's) an artist album was eagerly awaited, and I played that album constantly for a year after it came out. Now I buy tracks almost every week from Juno...

Re: How to get that techno sound?
Although (again) I can see both sides in the argument, it would be a real shame to drag Mattias' work, generously donated to a remix competition, thru a hardcore critique.
It was also originally a free track don't forget.
