Re: Dreadbox - Nymphes

I've been on a Dreadbox GAS spree lately ( here's a group photo ), I got Nymphes and Typhon earlier last year, and the reissues of Erebus and Hades a few weeks back. They're all quite different, the Erebus and Hades reissues are simpler analogue semimodulars and they sound smooth AF, Nymphes and Typ...

after the recent 2.5 update the TR8s is probably the best drummachine out there
There are still some gotchas and things that are awkward, e.g. there's no MIDI control for pattern variations and pattern effect control via MIDI is iffy at best - but yes, the latest update is a nice one.

Re: Erica Synths - Perkons

I've got an LXR-02 coming my way, got it second hand for a very decent price. Went through plenty of YT videos before committing, and I think it'll be exactly what I want at the moment. The only gripe I have is that half of the params that can be automated are NRPNs, so I'll most probably have to ma...

Re: And we're back!

I just read up on how to make the board private, it's a bit of a pain in the glutes because you'll have to modify each forum's permissions separately, but it seems doable even without being a phpBB savant: for all forums, give bots and guests No Access from Admin -> Permissions -> Forum Permissions.

Re: And we're back!

There has been an influx of attacks towards WP installations lately; unless you're using some exotic plugins, just keep WP up to date - if it's a recent enough version, you can set it to auto-update. If your WP has been pwned, it could be used to send spam or do any number of rather unsavoury things...

Re: And we're back!

You could start by making the site members only for a while, meaning that only registered users get to see anything, unregistered/guests get a login page. Maybe suspend registrations for a while as well. Do you have a dashboard where you see your bandwidth usage? Usually hosting companies put in a c...

Re: Quarantine

We Finns are probably the social distancing and self-isolation world champions regardless of circumstance. The Finnish government's response has been swift and decisive; by their request, everyone's self-quarantined for weeks already and working from home; even restaurants have been ordered to close...

Re: Soundcloud could fuck up a wet dream.

If there was even a half decent way of getting a feed like RSS/Atom from Bandcamp I'd ditch Soundcloud immediately. I skim Soundcloud to find out about new releases, artists and labels, then go support them on Bandcamp. Formaviva is trying to build up a direct Bandcamp competitor for electronic musi...

Re: Remembering Mark Bell (LFO) _ 5 Year Anniversary

LFO is one of the most formative musical acts of my personal history, I got to see them live here in Finland in 1993 (the party headliner was the Prodigy, but I went because of LFO). I habitually go back to Frequencies every now and then, although Advance and Sheath are great, too. Bell's own label ...

Re: Your favourite techno labels

I used to be unbelievably label-centric and completist when I was still doing the vinyl and vinyl only thing, nowadays I tend to go after interesting music regardless of label or artist - but I haven't completely let go of my habitual purchasing patterns. Here's a tiny sampler subset of (techno) lab...

Re: Bas Mooy picks his favourite 10 tracks on Mord

The recent releases have been a bit more subtle, the distorted kick ratio has dropped down to less than 25 % of tracks and there's even a pinch of variance in the label's signature style - I'd prefer to hear some harmonic and melodic elements alongside the percussive. Cheers -- Nuutti.

Re: Anybody into SciFi books?

I'm broadening my suggestions to speculative fiction, although there's a lot of scifi here; obviously everything by William Gibson , Bruce Sterling , Neal Stephenson . Richard Morgan 's Takeshi Kovacs series (Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, Woken Furies, Black Man) and Market Forces. Laura Lam 's Fal...

I'm in awe how Myson's sound has evolved throughout the years, this new album has mass, solidity and ethereality.

Cheers, Nuutti.

Re: Greatest pieces of electronic music ever made

Oh god, I would kill for a Likemind repress. I have the full set, but my copy of LM02 (Nuron/Fugue) is pressed ever so slightly off-center on the Fugue side, Contrapoint is fine but on Interlagos the styulus oscillates enough to audibly bend the track's pitch. All but two of the other tracks from t...

As I've not been issued an ASBO for disturbing the peace, intimidation or noise pollution I'll continue my inexhaustible rambling on the best pieces of semi-obscure electronic music in my world (semi-obscure because I'd rather bore you with things that you might not know instead of blathering on and...

Re: Greatest pieces of electronic music ever made

Reading through my previous post I noticed that I inadvertently left out the YouTube embed of Speedy J's Symmetry from Warp's AI II: lppXSL-nh7Q Speedy J's first two albums, Ginger and G Spot, were released on Warp; Ginger is the sixth release in Warp's seminal Artificial Intelligence series. Both h...

Quick tip - Rephlex, now-defunct label ran by The Aphex Twin and Grant Wilson-Claridge. Wading through the release catalog requires effort but rewards a coinnosseur of weird shit handsomely. --Nuutti.

Re: Experimental/listening electronic music

Yes, Autechre. If you're not familiar with Detroit Underground , you should be. The label's output oozes with idiosyncratic releases from drone to ambien, glitched experimental to electro, techno to whatever they feel like subjecting people to. After that get familiar with Schematic and if that's no...
