What I meantwas that I don't go beyond the brackets of -12 to -6 at any stage, but on the VU it looks sometimes as the needle would like escape from there Specially with those distorted kicks.

-18db peak? I usually aim for between -12 to -6 while recording to ableton. And when I use satson the VU on kicks peals usually pass 0. I never had any issues with that, as long as I'm not digitally clipping anywhere. Am I doing something wrong?
