VST alternative to Reason's Beat Map (algorithmic drum sequencer)

That's what I'm looking for. Been trying out the Reason rack plugin in Ableton and really like this thing. It rapidly spews out loads of drum patterns I would never come up with manually. Hella fun.

But I think you can only get it as part of the full Reason package and I'm not interested in the rest of it, so £20/month is a bit steep. Have looked around for a standalone alternative but so far come up short.

Anyone?

Don't know the features exactly.. but if you have m4l , instanthaus has been kicking around for ages..thought it was a bit of a generative tool.

Think there are other ones too. Think m4l k devices have some beat stuff in their packs.. again not totally sure of the features or if the results are comparable with the reason plug.

Another one worth checking is the xln xo. Sequencer is a bit basic to say the least (takes overthinking out of the equation I guess).. but makes up for it by having great quality sounds & allowing you to browse through every sample on your HD that you point to it (The Universe). There are some 'pre-rolled' beats in there, categorised by style. You can fully edit all in the internal sequencer. I think there might be a randomise feature.. but I've never used it actually & couldn't say if the results are usable.

I might check out some of the m4l stuff I own & see if i can point the various trigger channels to the corresponding tracks in XO. That could be cool..

I hadn't heard about Beat Map before, so had to watch a few videos. It looks to me like every "beat map" is essentially a limited (very large) set of variations in a certain style of music. So, in a way, you're basically remixing beats created by someone else, which is why its result sound musical right out of the box. After a while I suspect that each beat map will become more or less recognisable, since they're not really random. That's just a guess though. The number of possible variations might be too large for that.

In any case, I don't know of anything that uses this exact approach.

The closest plugin option I could find is "Liquid Rhythm" from WaveDNA, which also offers a large set of pre-made variations, along with some non algorithmic randomization options. The interface is a bit more complex, but with a bit of tinkering I think it would be possible to use it more or less in the same way.

instanthaus is a good one. Sits in front of a midi instrument so no routing faff. And very easy to use. But it's limited to housey housey patterns, can't get it to go too crazy. 

xln xo - the map of samples is a great idea. I ended up going with a similar one called Atlas. It has a feature that loads random kits, which I'm really enjoying. My manually selected kits can be pretty boring so a little randomness injection is just the ticket. 

Took a look over Liquid Rhythm and it seems like a sequencer within a sequencer. It can definitely do what I'm after but seems like overkill. 

The Audiodamage one looks really good. DLing the trial now.
