what new underground artists and labels are paving the way in 2019/2020
I was just thinking I really need to get up on my music, it's been a while since I've purchased any albums. The last 2 were special request and T47 releases.
I'm interested to hear of new upcoming artists or labels from any electronic genre, especially those who are blurring the lines or creating new genres. Thought this might be a good topic for the forum.

All the Grey Area stuff connected to Samurai Music and Auxillery is awesome.
It's where I'm headed musically now.
Music that straddles 3 different BPM (85, 127.5 and 170) and allows the movement between techno and Drum and bass.

I've been thinking about bpms as well recently. Also thought about doing something that has a stupidly fast bpm but half time beats so that it could be played with current trends. I'll check out those labels, thanks.

Yeah I'm thinking of new blood. I've edited the post title accordingly.

I'm really digging Bambounou after seeing him perfoming at a local club last year. He really managed to make my booty shake at 5am!

I find the idea of the Grey Area stuff pretty interesting, its just that in practice, a lot of it sticks to this very dull, sludgy sound palette with little in the way of interesting melody or harmony.Lost to the Void wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2019 6:19 pmAll the Grey Area stuff connected to Samurai Music and Auxillery is awesome.

TBH, I'm loving the sound design in what I'm hearing though. I really dig this stuff and it's super rhythmic nature.

Agreed. I couldn't finish podcast nr. 3 as it sounds like one big soundesign wank. Imo they try too hard to be different whereas it's just the same grayscale techno with different bpm's.dubdub wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 5:02 pmI find the idea of the Grey Area stuff pretty interesting, its just that in practice, a lot of it sticks to this very dull, sludgy sound palette with little in the way of interesting melody or harmony.Lost to the Void wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2019 6:19 pmAll the Grey Area stuff connected to Samurai Music and Auxillery is awesome.

Interesting from a producers view for sure but that shit wouldn't make me move a single toe in a club. There's no funk in that stuff.
Re: what new underground artists and labels are paving the way in 2019/2020
Will check them out. See mu-ziq & Pye corner on there as well as Anodyne. Was in The Funnel nightclub, Dublin. in the late 90s for his first album releaseover9000 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2019 1:58 pmhttps://analogicalforce.bandcamp.com/music

Electro continues to be the most interesting music to my ears. Its sound palette can be very adventurous & wild when done right. The older I get, the more convinced I am of this. It comfortably occupies the spaces in-between everything imo.

It`s a very emergent "genre", only a very few people making it, so it just takes new artists warping it their way.dubdub wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 5:02 pmI find the idea of the Grey Area stuff pretty interesting, its just that in practice, a lot of it sticks to this very dull, sludgy sound palette with little in the way of interesting melody or harmony.Lost to the Void wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2019 6:19 pmAll the Grey Area stuff connected to Samurai Music and Auxillery is awesome.

My version of it is a lot less "Borghein Industrial Techno" and I imagine as more people dig the creative opportunities it holds, it will open up further.

And yet you dig all that Raiden shit, that was stiffer than 14 planks of wood nailed together and sealed in resin, and had zero funk too.
Not that I entirely disagree (though funk is definitely not the remit of this type of music), it could do with less Berlin "industrial" techno sounds about it, it`s still very early days for this movement, for me it`s much more interesting than 99% of techno right now as it`s a great way of moving between bpm`s and rhythmic modes... Creatively it is like an open field, which to me is exciting.

Yeah, the grey area stuff IS very tonal, but they intend it to be transitional music, whereas I am more interested in making it a thing in and of itself.nomadjames wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 6:11 pmTBH, I'm loving the sound design in what I'm hearing though. The Samurai stuff is fucking wonderful.
But generally the samurai camp, and Auxiliary and the labels and artists around that sound, it`s great. They are really throwing genre to wind and beat structure and stuff, it`s much more about capturing a certain feeling.
I`m fully on board, I`ve been doing loads of experimental 170bpm and the fact you can span 3 bpm with it and really move the percussion in much more interesting ways... I`m feeling really liberated, production wise, I`ve been doing weird shit with beats for a long time, but techno crowds freak out when things aren`t mechanical, and it`s nice finding somewhere you can be more playful.

How do you know I dig Raiden? I liked that style when it was fresh back then as to me it was the first real fusion of DnB an techno plus I hung around with lots of the crew. But I don't listen to this stuff anymore since a long time.
But if I had to choose between that grayscale techno shite and the schranz 'n' bass crap i'd take the latter. At least it's hardcore and not a wannabe industrial show-off.

You say hardcore like it`s a good thing
Re: what new underground artists and labels are paving the way in 2019/2020
Well, hardcore punk is a lovely thing (to me at least) That kind of DnB was hard, straight, fast, aggressive so it reminded me of hardcore punk. Yeah, it's a good thing.
This kind of DnB was very welcome at squat raves.
That grayscale stuff sounds like SNTASS found out about time divisions. I bet they are wearing masks or robes, no?

Re: what new underground artists and labels are paving the way in 2019/2020
Ah luckily that shit never made it to illegal rave rigs here, Drum and Bass at the illegals in London was generally dark and nasty for the most part.
Did get a bit cracky at one point though haha.
Like I said, I don`t disagree about the grey area being too....grayscale (it`s insulting to say it`s as bad as SNoTS though, at least grey area is made with consideration and creative intelligence), as it is meant as transition music. However, the stuff that isn`t quite grey area, but not quite standard drum and bass, with the Samurai and Auxiliary etc, is the stuff I really find interesting. Homemade weapons generally drops a lot of fire in his sets.
Ena is a fucking genius. You won`t like it, it`s not hardcore, but creatively the guy is on another planet.
