Re: Artists names, or, a case of accidentally copying someone else's alias

Merv isn't a particularly original name to begin with, so I don't really see a problem. If you'd picked something that's close to something rather unique perhaps that would be questionable. It's not like Merv is exactly a household name either (seems they have one track that's sought-after? i.e. the...

There's a bunch of weirdos uploading impulse response packs on Freesound. Much fun to be had.

Re: Digital DJing techno... how do you do it in 2022

Traktor with loads of keyboard mappings for cueing/loading/previewing and any old MIDI controller for faders, EQ and filters. Sometimes I'll use an iPad with a more complete TouchOSC template. Never felt the need for dedicated DJing hardware.

It's a neat trick though! Also this was back when he was still making somewhat decent tracks. Randomer's recent output has been horrible.

Haven't tried it, but Sugar Bytes has a modular sequencer that looks fun to mess with: https://sugar-bytes.de/nest

Mimicking automation touch mode in Live

I just figured out this neat trick in Live so I figured I'd share. As you probably know, the way Live records automation in Arrangement view is by overwriting the envelope, which is essentially like using the "latch" mode in Logic. But what if instead you want to record a performance that includes b...

I've been having loads of fun with Noise Engineering's Ruina (free!) https://noiseengineering.us/products/ruina
It can achieve sounds like that of old DOD pedals like the Buzz Box.

Re: Future paths for techno

I haven't personally encountered anything like "safe spaces" at events I've been to, although that's likely because I only go to small DIY parties (100~200 people) with little promotion where everyone knows everyone else. For a brief moment, at the peak of that type of online discourse, there were p...

Re: Future paths for techno

Don't want to derail the thread too much, but how are those anti-harassment measures a bad thing? Do you really think it was better back in the old days? Or is it rather that you'd never really thought about what clubbing/partying is like for someone who's not a man back when you were younger? (I ce...

Kaleidoscope is pretty much a perfect album. Some of it mixes really well with techno too.

Been playing this a lot lately:

Re: Harking back to the old days

There's a few collectives, labels and mix series that I feel are churning out interesting sounds, like Truants, ithqdetroit, Honcho, INDEX:Records, countless others. Depends what vibe you're into I suppose. Follow as many people as you can, check out what they repost. Go from track listings (or IDs ...

Re: Productive things to do, when out of inspiration

Make samples, patches and kits. Dig deep into the archive and re-purpose, cut up, piece together, or process old ideas. Experiment with styles that are outside of whatever it is you're not finding inspiration for. Design a custom control surface for whatever synths you have. Go on listening dives (n...

batch sample processing with ffmpeg

By chance an actual TR-909 has temporarily found its place in my home studio, so I have taken up the task of sampling it. Of course this is a ton of work just in terms of sheer volume (and, yes kinda stupid since it's been sampled extensively by professionals), but the real hassle is the trimming pa...

Hi, I'm a producer who doesn't know what he's doing. Mostly here to learn production tips. Some people I think are good: Fanon Flowers, Jay Denham, Archetype, Oscar Mulero, Adriana Lopez, Takaaki Itoh, Hiroaki Iizuka, Go Hiyama, Lagware, DJ Slip, Timeblind, Stanislav Tolkachev, Random Logic, Oliver ...
